Integrating cold weather impacts on human performance into army M&S applications
نویسنده
چکیده
Exposure to cold weather has deleterious effects on the performance of soldiers. Gross and fine motor skills as well as cognitive ability are all diminished by exposure to low ambient temperatures. Clothing and equipment that protect the solider from cold also encumber the soldiers movement and dexterity. Therefore, while the solider is protected from the cold, his or her performance is reduced in terms of both time to perform a given task and accuracy. Food and water consumption are also greatly increased by exposure to the cold. For Army simulations to accurately represent missions that occur in cold weather, these impacts must be accounted for, yet they seldom have been. This paper will briefly review the physiological mechanisms for degraded performance in the cold. A sample of the data available in the literature on cold weather impacts on humans will also be presented. Finally we suggest how these impacts might be incorporated in military models and simulations.

A two-year survey on the effect of temperature changes on the incidence of myocardial infarction in patients referred to the Ali-ibn Abi Talib Hospital, Rafsanjan, Iran, in 2013-2014
Background: The role of temperature changes, as an environmental risk factor, in the human health status has been investigated in recent studies. Accordingly, the present two-year study was conducted to evaluate the incidence of myocardial infarction (MI) in warm and cold seasons in Ali-ibn Abi Talib Hospital, Rafsanjan, Iran. Materials and Methods: In this descriptive and cross-sectional st...

Significant psychological changes in extremely cold regions are considered as natural human reactions. Antarctica has very cold conditions and is considered a natural laboratory for many studies in various fields. Survival, in this harsh environment, is unmanageable without human preconditions; Antarctica with a focus on resilience and psychological adjustment, an opportunity for the individual...
متن کاملTHERMAL PERFORMANCE SIMULATION OF HYDROPONIC GREEN WALL IN A COLD CLIMATE
The green hydroponics walls are among new kinds of building facades, which receive more attention from architects lately. In addition to the positive effect these walls have in maintaining humidity in arid regions, they also have positive thermal performance in both cold and hot weather conditions. Therefore, they are in the center of designers’ focus for public spaces such as schools. In terms...
متن کاملEvaluation of a regional climate model for impact assessment of climate change on crop productivity in the tropics
Regional climate models (RCMs) are considered to be more useful than general circulation models for assessing impacts of climate change scenarios in agriculture. In this communication, the climatic outputs of an RCM–PRECIS (providing regional climates for impact studies) model were analysed by comparing its baseline simulation daily weather data on temperature and precipitation patterns with th...
متن کاملPreventing cold-related morbidity and mortality in a changing climate.
Winter weather patterns are anticipated to become more variable with increasing average global temperatures. Research shows that excess morbidity and mortality occurs during cold weather periods. We critically reviewed evidence relating temperature variability, health outcomes, and adaptation strategies to cold weather. Health outcomes included cardiovascular-, respiratory-, cerebrovascular-, a...
